Best Animated Film of the Year
Inside Out
Runner up
Shaun the Sheep
Why? Pixar has done it, and even though there was some emotion in The Good Dinosaur also, the emotion in this was more on point and the idea was brilliant. Shaun though gets kudos for not being a talking picture and still getting across the feel of the BBC series.
Best Comedy Film of the Year
Spy
Runner up
Trainwreck
The comedy market was saturated with dumb movies this time around and there just wasn't much of a playing field. Although ignored, Kinsman was also funny, but too similar to Spy to become runner up. Spy was a female Austin Powers and it works.
Best Science Fiction Film of the Year
The Martian
Runners Up
Mad Max Fury Road
Star Wars 7
Crowd pleasing and intensely popular, The Martian clocked in as the big winner all around for hard science fiction. Fantasy films like Star Wars and action thrillers like Mad Max also have their place, but it was a decision that Wars and Max are so niche they do not directly appeal to the larger audience. You have to be familiar with those genres. They're not the best of the year, but close.
Jurassic World was noted but was just a good sequel and not a great sequel.
Best Horror Thriller of the Year
The Hateful Eight
This late arrival pulled in the thriller genre, as we did not see many horror movies this year and cannot call Krampus or the other ones winners without seeing them. Having seen this one, it would win more by default than by design.
No actors or actresses or directors will be nominated.
Nod to JJ Abrams for Star Wars 7.
Nod to Quentin Tarantino for Hateful Eight.
Best Picture of 2015, in all Categories
This is based on movies we've actually seen to review, not in coming movies from early January 2016.
The Revnant is from 2015 but hasn't come out here, so it's 2016 to us.
Everest is not a great film. It's trying to be, but it's not.
Hateful Eight is potentially a great film, but it's not for mass audiences and will likely not do so hot in wide release.
Star Wars 7 is a very well done epic sequel and a competent film. Is it the best? Well nearly.
The Martian is a crowd pleasing and engaging epic space opera film about loneliness. It is one of the best.
Mad Max Fury Road is a very well done racing movie and an engaging and brutal remake.
Inside Out is nearly perfect.
Best Picture of the Year
The Martian
Runners Up
Inside Out
Mad Max
Star Wars 7
Why? It is just the best of 2015 and the most popular movie since Avatar, (the Blue Man Group meets Thundercats meet Pocahontas), raking in at billions domestically and worldwide.
Worst Film of the Year
Point Break 2015
We did not see the worst films of 2015 but Jem, Fantastic 4, and Pixels should be three of them.
Point Break the remake calls it though. It truly was crap.
