Review: 'Cloverfield' is slow going for half hour and then is dizzyingly insane

Cloverfield   PG 13
Something terrible has just happened in New York City in this monster movie crossed with 9/11 message flick, set in the present day (2008). When a party for a friend goes somewhat awry, several young adults run for their lives after a series of strange explosions rock the city, and the head of the Statue of Liberty falls in the street. A hideous monster lobster thing is tearing up the city. They spend the movie running from the monster. Scarier than some of the other fright flicks, like the US Godzilla, (which wasn't), and The Blair Witch Project, (also billed as a real life thing), but it suffers from the jerky amateur camera movement simulated at nausea throughout. The first 30 minutes is jarringly annoying, with the amateur camera wielding eggheads shooting shots of chests, foreheads, and tables, and glasses, while people talk in the background. It gets three stars for the rest, a strong and spooky monster flick, but would have been better had it not been for the bad camera effects.
