Review: 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone' is fair to the novel and a fun and magical journey

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone PG
Chris Columbus launches the Harry Potter franchise with this charming adaptation of the first book in JK Rowling's award winning book series. Harry is a wizard boy who is orphaned and must be raised by his sadistic uncle, only to be whisked away to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He meets his charming friends, Ron and Hermione, a giant named Hagrid, and his nemesis, Voldemort, among other magical characters. The first outing tries to compress the weakest of the books into a hit movie in just 2 hours and kind of loses some of it in translation, but is certainly a rousing and fun send up. The idea of a boy wizard fighting evil is not too original but Rowling’s story and direction from Columbus manage to make it work for the world they’ve created.
