Review: 'Sucker Punch' is exploitation drama in guise as chick movie

Sucker Punch   PG 13
Sucker Punch is not a movie that is easy to stomach. Do not confuse it for the 2003 film. This asylum drama turned action T and A gore fest is not fun even if it tries to be. It is basically Heavy Metal 2000 (the crap sequel to HM) meets Shutter Island. Zack Snyder's special effects heavy fable is ultimately a waste of film. His brutal asylum footage is so completely over the top dreary and misogynistic the action pieces seem like they belong in another movie. Nobody in it is likeable, even some decent star power in the female leads, because they're all trapped in this nuthouse with a crazy staff that wants to smack them around and threaten them. At least with Shutter Island nobody is threatened with sexual violence. Ignore the impossible logic in the fantasies, or even pretend they're a different film, but one still cannot get past the horror, as in horrible, A story about the asylum. The dazzling effects pieces don't seem to belong in the same movie, and are disjointed save for there being five things to get to escape.
