Review: 'Australia' is pretty epic with good acting

Australia    PG  13
Baz Lurhman's sweeping epic of a cowboy, Hugh Jackman's gruff character, and a trite Englishwoman, Nicole Kidman, is a visually pretty movie. The flick is set in Australia during World War II and tells the story of a widowed cattle heiress and her battle with a rival cattleman and his evil hired gun. More deserving of the Best Picture nod than Slumdog Millionaire, but overlong and split critical views, (you either love it or hate it) doesn't make for crowd pleasing. Does better on DVD. Surely an epic and yet overlong. Jackman does well in the part and Kidman does a tad better. Neither give pest acting roles but the story itself deserves kudos for the sweeping epic style, the frontier life and the multiple plots that actually do come together well. It's not hard to follow. The simplicity is what bugged some people. I liked it better than 'There will be Blood' from 2008.
