Charlie Wilson's War R
Charlie Wilson is a congressman from the mid 1980s who with the help of a few inside guys, covertly pushed the Russians out of Afghanistan and invented the nomadic militant rebel group that would one day merge into the Taliban. Tom Hanks is Oscar worthy as usual as Wilson, sporting a good Texas accent. Julia Roberts plays a socialite Madame, also sporting a southern accent, and actually she's pretty good in the role. Using stock footage of rebels mixed with movie magic, the secret war that helped to bankrupt Communism in the 80s is a good flick and it tells a message about superpower countries helping or hindering undeveloped ones through using weapons, the spoils of war, and the drama of war also. Not for kids or young adults. A bit too heavy on the inside men. Fun all the same. Review by Adam Browne
