Review: 'Star Trek' is a thrilling ride with fantasy over science fiction

Star Trek   PG 13
JJ Abrams and the guys that wrote Transformers 1 and 2 (upcoming) recharge the Star Trek legend in this reboot of the original series from 42 years ago. The McGuffin of how they arrive in a parallel timeline is a little forced, literally, when an alien named Nero from the 24th century (2387) is chasing a renegade Vulcan after he accidentally blew up his planet. Arriving in 2233, the alien miner freaks out and attacks a Federation ship inadvertently setting of a chain of events leading to the chance meeting of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy at the Academy in 2258. Captain Pike commands the Enterprise on her maiden voyage with the clash of legends imminent aboard. Warp speed to this astounding 'odd numbered Trek' which breaks the moulde and literally bursts through the screen for a new generation, and has enough fun for the previous generations. Let the debate about the space talk and the nature of alternate timelines and black holes versus worm holes begin! Star Trek Lives! Pine is great as Kirk, literally chewing his way through scenery. Quinto is spot on as Spock and Urban is just spooky channeling Bones McCoy. Ignore the convenient singularity stuff and just enjoy the ride. Warp speed now!
