Review: 'Against All Odds' is downbeat despite hit soundtrack

Against All Odds    R
This is for the 1980s version. An ex athlete sent to protect a lovely informant from the mob is smitten by her. Unfortunately, this movie has the crappiest ending ever. If Hackford did it on purpose, he certainly wanted to get anyone watching depressed. Part of the problem with a thinly veiled drama like this is the characters aren’t likeable from the start. The jock is so clueless that you wish the girl didn’t end up with him, but just when you kind of feel sympathy for his plight, partly because of the hit songs on it, you are ripped from that world into a different reality where you don’t get a satisfying ending, but a stupid bleak non ending. This was the script and the director, whereas the director was trying for ironic shock in the guise of good drama, and it comes off as merely pretentious and stupid. It makes the 2 hours seeing it a waste.
