Review: 'The Dark Knight' is gritty crime adventure with stellar performances

Batman: The Dark Knight   PG 13
Chris Nolan actually tops himself in this inspiring and dark sequel to the Batman Begins story, outclassing the Tim Burton Batman it takes from by leaps and bounds. "I'm not the hero.", "You're the savior of Gotham, a dark knight." True to the source material, mainly Miller's adaptation of Dark Knight and Shadow of the Bat from the mid 1990s, brooding Bruce Wayne, (Christian Bale again) is forlorn for his love, (a new actress, Maggie Gyllenheal, plays Rachel) who has caught the eye of Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). Meanwhile, the Joker (Heath Ledger) is making moves on the entire crime syndicate of Gotham, with explosive laughter and dark, twisted, sadomasochistic glory. Nolan has a way with action and suspense in this, and has gripping dialogue to boot. Nothing is ever tedius. Quick pacing and wondrous action with use of CG only to help the story is just epic. It's just a marvel. Heath Ledger's Joker is 'just spot on the right Joker', the way he's supposed to be. Pity Ledger died and cannot reprise the role. Give him a posthumous Oscar though. He makes Nicholson's madmen look sane compared to him. "You're a feisty one. I like that!" Two thumbs up, Adam Browne and guest Tim Cantrell (Batman and comics expert). He's Batman, am I am Nightwing. Ha. Note: PG 13 in this case is nearly R. Too intense for small children. If you have kids, leave them with the Grandparents. Fortunately, nobody was dumb enough to bring their little ones. It would be a mistake. Joker will scare them. The best movie of the year.
