Review 'Heavy Metal' is series of weird events but fun

Heavy Metal    R
Rock opera meets surreal comic book worlds in this trippy heavy hitting cartoon. An instant classic. Everyone had a copy of this who was in back then. It was just the essence of cool. Seventeen short animation adventures taken from the pages of Heavy Metal with songs from the rock bands of the 80s. The stories center on an evil sphere called the Loc Nar that corrupts several dimensions represented by animated worlds. Especially memorable are the Stern short, the Tarakian warrior and the hilarious shorts where John Candy plays a muscleman hero and in another a robot on a sphere ship with stoned pilots. Simpsons, Futurama, Transformers and He Man borrowed ideas from this evidently. The robot is basically Bender for one thing and Stern is basically the jerk Captain character. The He Man stuff is everywhere. Also it seems to have a Star Wars feel at times, and a nod to Star Trek also, and Forbidden Planet.
Also the opening cabbie story, ‘Harry Canyon’ is basically the idea used for the film, ‘The Fifth Element’.
