Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist PG 13
Michael Cera (Nick) and Kat Dennings (Norah) play opposites in this date flick about a night on the town in New York with friends. Nick is the straight guy in a gay band and Norah is the record producer's daughter who has to rescue her drunken friend after she wanders off. Not nearly as trite or pretentious as most New York set movies, a sort of 200 Cigarettes meets Some Kind of Wonderful meets Adventures in Babysitting, (the two later movies being two classics it appears to homage). Definitely uses the best elements of the 80s teen flick roadie movies and updates from for the garage band dork set of the next generation. Peter Sollett's directing is pretty good. Based on a novel by Rachel Cohen and David Levithan that is probably a fair adaptation. (Book not reviewed). Supporting roles are also fun, like the drunken girl and the vindictive ex girlfriend. Thus far, the best dramatic teen movie of the year, (with some comedy elements and some gross outs). The only drawback is that Cera is typecast as a lanky quiet mousy misfit in his movies. Agreed: It was a nice movie. Not preachy. Not pretentious. Just breezy and nice.
