Beauty and the Beast G
Trousedale directs this lavish animated take on the ancient story, Beauty and the Beast, where Belle, the lovely girl, befriends a strange brute who hides in a castle, but an evil mob is after them. It is one of the great movies of the earlier 1990s, especially for the score, of which it was nominated for an Oscar. The enchanted furniture was kind of silly, but it is a cartoon. Disney makes it much more palatable than the series that had recently carried the same name, and had nothing to do with it. The idea of the classic girl discovers the brute who she tames has been held in literature for ages. Has great characters and songs, and includes the great Angela Lansbury. Story helped that a TV series of the same concept had ended several months before, starring Ron Pearlman and Linda Hamilton. The cartoon was more for children and families. Later it became a stage play and was remade live action in the 2000s as Beastly, but it was clearly not the same concept anymore. The cartoon still seems somewhat dated and the enchanted objects accounting for the Beast’s wait staff is odd, but given that it’s great anyway. Still it will not be a classic until around 2014.
