Burn After Reading R
A CIA analyst is fired from his job because he's just not any good, but his bosses are equally abiding by the Peter Principle, as it turns out. Indeed, everyone in this is promoted to the highest level of incopetence. John Malkovich is quite funny as the brash agent man, and Brad Pitt plays a mockery of himself, chewing scenery as a gym jock who get's a hold of the agent's memories by mistake. The Coen brothers give a glib taste of political farce where even George Clooney is almost convincing, as the luckless man Malkvich's wife is cheating in on the story. Lately, Clooney has only been able to play himself. Here he actually seems to enjoy playing a parody of himself. At times though the film is ham fisted, and gives away the punch line long before it actually happens, and for that, it's just not great. It's good but not great. A tighter script with less shock and awe throw away gags would have made for a much funnier movie. Review by Adam Browne
