Dinner for Schmucks PG 13
Jay Roach directs what amounts to a 2 hour long SNL sketch in this offbeat comedy where a businessman is forced to find a complete idiot to invite to a dinner for idiots where he can thus be totally humiliated by his company peers. Seems kind of like The Office from the US version without the clever wit. At times there are funny gags, like the tax audit scene, (the auditor can supposedly read your mind) and the search for a part of the female anatomy, (where the joke was done better in South Park). But for the most part the story is trying too hard to be as foolish as it can, with blunt gags you can tell the outcome from the moment they lay them on. You just know the girl is going to get mistaken for the other girl. You just know the guy with the sword is going to hurt someone. Carroll does play a creepy taxidermist who turns dead mice into art, and there is a fake art fancier in a goat's head scalp, but except for that, most of it is predictable. Review by Adam Browne
