Review: 'Gran Torino' is like grizzled follow up to earlier Eastwood flicks

Gran Torino    R
Clint Eastwood directs and stars in this Midwestern fable of America meets Asian Islander culture in this simple tale of a bitter old veteran and his relationship with his mhong neighbors following the attempted theft of his prized 1972 Gran Torino sports car. Usually when a guy directs and stars in his stuff it's pretentious drivel, but Eastwood's gritty style distances himself from his work, making for a riveting, flawed, hubris laden slice of suburban life. Distanced from his sons, the Kowalski character has nowhere to go, but when gangs start harassing him, it's almost a send up to the 'Dirty Harry', 'Any Which Way But Loose' days. Good ol' boy Eastwood is now more old than good but still manages to pull it off well. One of the year's best movies.
