Monster R
This is an extremely mean and gritty flick about a murdering hooker (Oscar winner Charlese Therone in tons of makeup to make her ugly) and her sidekick, Christina Ricci (in an Oscar worthy performance she doesn't get credit for). Why they didn't cast someone who actually looked haggard and was just a good female lead is not known. Anyone with acting chops could have done it. Making her up to look ugly was a waste, for her and of money, but they were banking on Therone alone. They also ignored Ricci who wasn't playing her usual gloomy roles at all in this, but was playing a sidekick victim who had been suckered into hanging out with the evil hooker chick. What is truly brilliant about this is how it makes one think about the mind of a psychotic, and the equally sleazy, crazy people she meets. Review by Adam Browne
