Review: 'Paul' is fun roadie comedy with a CGI wisecracking alien

Paul   R
Paul is ET crossed with Almost Famous and Galaxy Quest. The awkward idea of having two Brits at Comic Con (the big San Diego comics convention) with a scifi book idea and a read trip that follows actually works here. The two misfits run into some bar room hicks, literally, and then are chased by insane FBI agents in a Men in Black or X Files spoof, with an ominous yet familiar evil female villain tracking them. They happen upon the embodiment of their trip to see UFO legends of the southwestern an actual alien from another planet, who hides out in their trailer and can disappear at whim. When they happen upon a whacked out religious nut and her 30 something one eyed daughter, who never leaves the trailer park, she runs off with them on their crazy adventure. As a send up to various roadie films and 80s UFO alien films it seems to work, and at times it is quite funny. Like Superbad, it relies of a solid comic cast able to pull off humor from the most mundane or often stupid situations.
