Review: 'Pineapple Express' is half comedy and half tragedy

Pineapple Express   R
Seth Rogan and James Franco star in a modern pot smoking comedy adventure for the new century. A slacker stoner (who loves a high school senior, for shock value), meets his drug dealer to score the new weed called pineapple express and they get high, but the senior girl isn't there for that. Deviating from Kevin Smith territory quickly, the slacker stoners find themselves accidentally embroiled in a drug war in their town when one of them witnesses a drugland killing and accidentally drops his special weed at the scene when he runs off. The result is a dizzying twisty and paranoid race to avoid the bad guys and prevent the girl's family from being involved somehow. Cheech and Chong would dig the first part. The second part is more like a chase movie, spoofing the genre liberally, and there is even a secret abandoned underground military bunker in it full of weed. Stoners would like it until the stuff starts getting messy with all the chasing and shouting, and eventually the shooting. Not a stoner review though. Go see it if you're looking for escapist paranoid action comedy.
