Review: 'The Pick Up Artist' is actually a loser in this sadly lacking comedy

The Pick Up Artist   PG 13
Molly Ringwald and Robert Downey Jr. are wasted on this stupid movie about a pick up artist guy who somehow convinces a mob boss's daughter that he is Casanova incarnate. No. If it was a drama, it would be depressing. If it was a comedy it would be boring. The flick can't decide what it wants to be, even as it defines "angst". Either way, it sucked. The main problem with satires like this was the writing. The script was evidently hacked out from several other ideas, and the direction was all over the place. The characters were weak so you don’t feel for any of them, and would sooner have the lead actor be offed by the mob boss, rather than think he is really a tomcat. Clearly they were thinking ‘Against All Odds’ meets ‘Casino’, but they failed. The premise that there chemistry between the leads was laughable. About the only real jokes were had by accident.
