The Princess and the Frog G
Disney has to hank Pixar for saving their hides several times over, and although this was a traditional cell animation musical, it had some PIxar composer help, in Newman (the Toy Story guy). Set in Jazz Era New Orleans, the story of the 'Frog Princess' is a modern update of the classic children’s tale of a bewitched prince turned into a frog who must kiss a princess before midnight to be restored. Transformation into frog this time is caused by an evil witch doctor, but in a Shrek like twist, the princess is also transformed into a frog and must deal with the somewhat shallow prince to get them both back to human form. Story falls back on old classic Disney flare and does well, even using the in jokes conservatively (the cat obviously being the white cat from 'Aristocats' for one, Shrek like transform for two). A cast of relatively new voices lend their talent to the animated spectacle, and it's similar in tone to 'Lady and the Tramp' more so than 'Cinderella' or 'Beauty and the Beast'. An excellent new movie to add to the collection. Review by Adam Browne
