Scott Pilgrim
vs. the World
PG 13
Michael Cera (Superbad, Youth in
Revolt) plays the 'y generation hipster' Canadian garage band star of Sex
BaBomb in this alternative comic book turned feature film, 'Scott Pilgrim vs.
The World'. Edgar Wright directs the hyper kinetic comedy action as Scott
juggles girlfriends and buddies, and life in general but doesn't find true
meaning until Ramona comes along. Problem is Ramona has '7 evil exes' or ex
lovers, (one of them is not a 'boy' friend) who Pigrim must defeat in battle
through elaborate choreographed video game like action. Just as John Hughes
films like 'The Breakfast Club' and 'Weird Science' defined 'my generation'
this one could very well define the next. Not as bittersweet as say,
'Adventureland' and definitely one up on 'Superbad', the audience even
applauded as the end credits rolled. Has some of the indie rock pop scene like
in 'Nick and Nora' and now decade old 'Ghost World' another excellent comic
adaptation. Visuals likened to 'Across the Universe' meets 'Tron' meets 'Weird
Science'. And all people named Ramona are cool. Really. At least this time
they're finally saying it is in Canada instead of pretending like Toronto is
New York. Still really there is nothing bad about this movie. Younger children
might not get it, but there is enough visual candy to keep them interested.
This is more for disenchanted '20 something' struggling alternative band fans.
Also the liberal use of 'dimensions' will boggle the mind. It's a comic con,
hipster, costume play fan's dream story too. The best so far of the year. Review by Adam Browne
