Review: 'Star Trek' warps onto movie screens slowly

Star Trek: The Motion Picture   G
Robert Wise and Allan Dean Foster and the crew of the Starship Enterprise get refit for the Big Screen in this epic film, which is truly a space epic set aboard the ship as they enter a mysterious cloud bound for Earth. Although at times it is plodding and has plenty of staring in awe, it isn't so bad, especially the director's edition of the DVD, where Wise was allowed to restore the half completed film decades later. Shatner, Nimoy, Kelley and the rest return from TV obscurity a decade earlier, and look it, but claim it's only about 3 years later. The crew must face a giant cloud of alien design headed for Earth, with enough power to destroy a solar system. The Enterprise rushes into the cloud and makes contact with alien probes, one of which takes a crew person named Ilia and turns her into a perfect machine clone, and sends her back to communicate. The vibe is 2001 meets Star Wars meets Star Trek. Yes it does drag on and there are really no space battles but it is a thinking story with the crew solving a mystery. Acting is a little stuff and the bridge is kind of dark. Even so, the story comes off well and is thoughtful and interesting.
