About Schmidt R
Jack Nicholson plays a man forced into retirement who goes on a road trip to be at his slacker daughter's wedding. He is a glum character who irks everyone and annoys his relatives, except for a horny relative who wants him for no reason, upon his arrival at the party. Cathy Bates plays the relative who shows her aging saggy boob to him. It's a shock and awe scene that elicits a gag response, that for some reason the conservatives liked better than Janet Jackson's similar flashing display on TV a year earlier. Not sure what to make of that. Anyway, the movie is quite boring and tedious. It's just too realistic at first, as in depressing and glum, and then derails itself into ridiculous, as though they decided to turn it into a comedy at the last minute, sans good jokes, unless you like Bates. Review by Adam Browne
Like When Harry Met Sally, which had one shocking humor moment, this one does also, but for another reason under different circumstances. The audience is supposed to wince at the scene, not be excited. The news people likely should stick to politics and not review movies for this reason.
