The Expendables R
Sly Stallone, Dolph Lundrgen and
Mickey Rourke return with an ensemble of guest stars from 80s action flicks to
decimate a ruthless warlord's empire in 'The Expendables', a rip off of A Team
and Rambo and what 'Mission Impossible' movies should have been, with a team,
not just one guy. Like kicking a dead horse, these aged action actors are a special
forces unit doing small time action in Somalia busting pirates when a covert
ops guy (Schwarzenegger in a delightful cameo) and another special ops guy
(Bruce Willis) give them the take down of a rogue CIA dude who has seized a
Central American island. Stallone slurs his way through his own dialog (which
he wrote) and directed, which isn't a good sign, but the action and FX are
pretty decent, with video game exploding buildings and gory bursts of faceless
(and sometimes face painted) soldier drones every now and then. Good for
playing in the background when nothing else is on during a dull summer weekend.
Rourke is just bizarre as the tattoo guy. Not sure what he was on. Nobody
convinces the audience they're anything but action eye candy, or way, way too
old to be really doing the stunts anymore. They play up on this by claiming
they're still awesome 'like light speed fast' and doing heavily sped up
choreographed stunt double work. Some of the gore is in the style of Mortal
Kombat the video game, not the movies, and various war games. By the numbers
action with a hot chick, a brutal scene, a car chase, a plane chase, and a
castle or palace getting blown to bits. Review by Adam Browne
