The King of
Comedy PG
This is an atrocious train wreck of
a "comedy". Scorsese was clearly not thinking when he made this. He
should have stuck to dark, gritty movies, like dramas. This movie actually made
me wince when I saw it for the first time, regardless of whether or not I was
too young to understand dark satire. I was a teenager. Even so, a repeat
viewing years later when I did only proved it...the movie actually sucked like
I remembered. The story is about a feud between comedians
where one of them wants to outdo the other, or get rid of him, and there is
this big contrived conspiracy about the two. A decade later, Jim Carrey
accurately did the same idea with ‘Man on the Moon’ where it worked because the
rivalry was played for laughs. With some likeness to the dark ‘Death to Smoochy’
of later years, it is not a fun movie and the sarcastic lead is so unlikeable
you want the bad guy to off him just to get him to shut up. If that was the
point, that and bad jokes that not one are funny, the writers have succeeded. Review by Adam Browne
